The Ottawa International Animation Festival
I recently returned from attending the 2009 International Animation Festival up in Ottawa. I took the bus up with AIB and stayed in the Econolodge with some friends. This years festival presented some great work submitted from around the world.The festival was later in october this year so of course it was colder up there in Canada. It was snowing when we rolled into town so we were worried the weather was going to be bad all week but thankfully it ended up being really nice the whole time. I feel like there was a good amount of really well put together stop motion pieces in competition this year as opposed to last year. Three stand out examples were Mary and Max, $9.99, and Edison and Leo. Not to say there wasn’t any good 2d animation at the festival but these pieces in particular stuck out in my mind. There was a cool collection of horror themed animations shown at the festival seeing as Halloween is right around the corner. There was also a strange amount of horrifying and bizarre animations about babies and child birth in general. The narrative short Changeling shown during the short competition 1 was downright chilling at points. It deals with a mother’s struggle to over come post partum depression combined with the metaphor of the of the tale of the changeling. Also at the festival we had the opportunity to see Henry Selick and Don Hertzfeldt talk about their work. Henry Selick of course is the animation director behind films like The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline while Don Hertzfeldt is known for stuff like Billy’s Balloon, Rejected, and The Animation Show he works on with Mike Judge. Hearing both animators talk and having seen a good chunk of both artists’ work really gave us insight into what it takes to become successful in the industry of animation. Going to this festival the past two year i always feel that the best part is coming home with renewed motivation to do something. It’s always hard to build up the steam to put behind a project big enough, but seeing and experiencing everything there at the festival is like an overload to the system that will give you the right kick in the pants to get you to start thinking about and making more work. Anyone into illustration/ animation I’d definitely recommend going to the festival if ever given the chance you won’t regret it. Well that and the poutine in Canada is to die for!
