It IS as cool as you think it would be to work at a comic book store!
A few weeks back I started my new job at the comic shop in town. I go in real early on wednesday mornings and help to open the store and start sorting all the new books that are delivered that morning. Wednesday of course as you may or may not know is new comic book day so its usually the busiest day of the week. There are eight to ten good size boxes waiting for us fresh from Diamond distributors that we take into the store to inventory, count it, sub and break down. These boxes can contain any of the new titles coming in that week as well as any new trades or hardcover collections. We also get a fair share of special orders. Just a couple weeks ago we received nine copies of the new deluxe edition Martha Washington collected edition which isn’t exactly a small book with its 600 pages crammed into a fancy heavy duty slip case. And at a hundred bucks a pop it better be fancy as hell. I just don’t know if it’s even possible to comfortably read a book that heavy. For the most part we just move single issues. Hundreds of em. We separate em for what’s going into peoples subscriptions, what’s going onto the shelf, and one issue of each new title is put aside to be scanned into the system. Because we’re working on an old system we do the subs by title and and not by person. So I’m up and down a lot shoulder deep in busted old filing cabinets. We’ve been there since around 7:30 and people don’t usually come in till 11, but there’s people who come in like clockwork and if you don’t have their sub done and the new books aren’t up on the shelf yet they just don’t know what to do. I like to make sure everyone gets what their looking for. Since I’ve been getting comics for so long myself I know how annoying it can be to get home and realize you forgot a book or two. So sometimes if someone comes in real early before we’re anywhere near finished I’ll get them their sub book by book if I have too cause there’s not much worse then having someone in your way while your trying to work. There isn’t a lot of room in the store as it is but when you have people futzing around while your trying to alphabetically fill a specific number of subbed books it can be annoying. You can easily imagine the kind of crowd that wanders into a comic book store on a regular basis. You have to be prepared to be able to deal with some pretty obnoxious people just like in any retail job, but I feel like this store in particular attracts a fair share of rather interesting people as well. While on the job I might go to help someone looking for a particular title or just looking for a recommendation but in any case it can lead to some interesting conversation. On Wednesdays the trend seems to be I go in and work for ten to twelve hours. I don’t mind it seeing as I need the hours and I love being surrounded by comic books all day. I pick up books now that I might not have looked at before. It helps that I get a pretty bitchin’ discount too. You also tend to get a fair amount of the silly comic book related conversation/ arguments a la any Kevin Smith film so it’s like your in a movie. So YES! If you’ve ever wondered. It IS as cool as you think it would be.
