So I’ve been all over the place recently. Been figuring alot of stuff out and getting alot of stuff together. Recently my buddy Steve who sometimes writes for Comic Book Resources managed to hook me up with a job reporting for them at the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con. He knew I was going down to visit family and stuff in Maryland and it just so happened to line up perfectly with the convention that weekend so I went and worked on a story about “Madman” writer/creator/artist Mike Allred! It was a great panel and very informative but surprisingly not much talk about his latest work on the vertigo title “iZombie” considering the moderator for the panel was the writer on that series, Chris Roberson. It was still a great time and they actually published my store on their site here. So that neato. Besides that I’ve been trying to get my stuff together for MICE the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (or something) being held at AIB sometime this month. I know i couldn’t really be vaguer about it at this point but really im still confused as to when so here’s hoping it hasn’t happened already. My good buddy Ché and I will possibly be debuting our new comic collaborations. We still need to figure a few things out. Other then those two gems of info not much other news besides a few new painting on the way and a possibly new childrens book in the works but we’ll see how that goes ^_~.

In honor of my twenty-third year of being on this planet yesterday, July the 17th, I decided to incorporate my favorite color into Katrina and I’s breakfast. Now blue isn’t a color often seen during breakfast unless your eating some sugary kids’ cereal or a pop tart or something. You don’t usually see blue scrambled eggs. I had no idea if this was even going to work, but I did it anyway cause it was my birthday gosh darnit! So I scrambled up four eggs and added a ton of blue food coloring. We had the dyes left over from making frosting for a cake last week so I figured I might as well use it cause there was a ton left. Now the sight of the blue eggs wasn’t that strange for me but according to Katrina it did make her gag a little at first. I had no problem with them until I went to add the cheese. This week when went shopping we got the neon orange American singles slices. When you add orange to blue you usually get a brownish color but then with the milk I added brown turned gray and that’s what got me to gag a little cause it started to look like I was frying up some fresh brains. The cheese eventually cooked down into the eggs and it miraculously turned back to bright blue. I don’t know how that works, but I’m glad it did. For anyone wondering the eggs tasted fine. If anything they tasted better than normal eggs cause they were blue. Anyway we brought our blue breakfast back up to our room to eat in bed only to find that our eggs matched the sheets almost perfectly. It was an awesome start to my birthday indeed!

For anyone looking to make Blue Birthday Eggs I’ve attached the recipe below:

EGGS + BLUE FOOD DYE = BLUE BIRTHDAY EGGS

So in honor of my beautiful face being featured in Avengers issue #2 I made my very own variant cover for New Avengers #1 that came out this past week! Every once in a while when they come out with blank sketch covers we’ll draw on comic bags so it looks like we have some fancy one of a kind variants when actually its just us foolin around geekin out and being all artsy fartsy. This super fine variant is sitting on the rack at the Million Year Picnic comic shop in Harvard Sq, where coincidentally I work, and is available for cover price at $3.99 (what a deal!!) It features Hulk Hogan and the Incredible Hulk solving a case of mistaken identity! I have a copy of the scanned pencils but the actual finished inks on the bag are a lot nicer, but I put together a little mock-up so you get an idea of what it kinda looks like! I was very pleased with the finished product!

In other news if you haven’t noticed I updated the site the other day and was actually able to fix it after it was down for a little while because of a mishap with a mis-labled folder throwing off all the links and files. So everythings back to normal and there’s even some new stuff on there including my new “Kahnyay” piece! So if you haven’t already check it out, and there should be some super awesome new stuff on the way soon so check back periodically!

Since they re-launched all the Avengers books after the whole Siege dealy-o they’ve had this “I Am An Avenger!” marketing campaign. If you submitted a photo at iamanavenger.com you might just win the chance to be featured in one of these books. Just for the heck of it I tossed my photo in the pot to see what would happen and BAM there I am! Tony and I decided that as an Avenger my power would be using my shifty eyed glance to make bad guys feel uneasy. It’d be a I’d set em up, they’d knock em down kinda deal. Dr. Doom better look out cause here comes The Abbs Man!!!

(…I’ll also gladly sign any copies of Avengers issue #2 “year book” style if asked Nicely ^_~)

I figured I’d give a rough update of things to come down the line. Right now we’re keeping up with the Boston Gastronauts so if you haven’t had a chance to check us out there I’d totally recommend it! I’m also currently working on my new childrens’ book endeavor which will hopefully be out in time for MICE this year! For anyone who actually picked up Danny the Dung Beetle it’s in the same vein, but I feel like I’m gonna’ be having a lot more fun with this one! Che and I have also recently submitted our work for the BCR’s new horror anthology Hellbound which will prolly be hitting in October so keep your eyes peeled. From what I’ve seen of what other people have submitted its definitely going to be another top notch compilation from those guys! Also we’re planning on having a table at MICE so anyone planning on attending can look for us there selling all kinds of goodies! So yeah with so much going on I know its hard to keep track of it all, but later today there’ll also be a small art update on the website itself. Now on to a sad note. Recently the deaths of Frank Frazetta, Gary Coleman, and Dennis Hopper prompted me to work up a tribute image to these three gentlemen so that’s on the way too. That’s all I can think of right now, but I’m sure there’ll be more soon so I’ll keep ya posted!

Most recently topping Christmas as the best holiday all year Free Comic Book Day or FCBD is happening tomorrow! So if you aren’t in the know you should head out to your nearest comic shop and pick up some goodies. Most stores also have awesome sales and events going on to coincide with the freeness. The Million Year Picnic in Harvard Sq. has lots of stuff planned. They have kids activities, book signings and readings along with refreshments and last but not least FREE COMICS! I’ve already got to peak at some of the nooks coming in. It’s one of the perks of working at the store ^_~. But there’s going to be some real good stuff up for grabs tomorrow. The Archaia Fraggle Rock/ Mouse Guard flip book is already had to find so if you see it snatch it up especially if you know some little rascal who’d get a kick out of it. So if you don’t already have any boring old regular Saturday things planned go out and get yourself some free happiness! Because if there’s one thing people love more than a free t-shirt it’s free comics!

Just a short update. As you may or may not have noticed the website still hasn’t been updated. It unintentionally became the lamest April Fools prank ever. Of course as soon as I announce that I was going to have everything updated the the entire site overhauled doesn’t my laptop kick the bucket. Right around having that new website layout 90% done. So at this point I’m still in the process of trying to retrieve my data from the dead computer although it’s looking more and more like it might just be a lost cause. I got me a nice new computer though in the meantime and I’m gonna start re-working everything over again, but it’ll probably just resemble the old site with new work like a regular update. Nothing special here. So much for trying…

On a less defeating tangent. How was everyone’s Easter? Mine? Pretty awesome!

Hey all so another of these “wouldn’t it be cool if we did this…” scenarios popped up this past week. No I didn’t take another quick jaunt across the country with three tough broads, but what I did do was start a new blog with my buddy Che. We got hung up on the idea of where we could find strange and unusual food in the Boston area after Che mentioned having a hunger for a what we found out to be called a “Fat Sandwhich”. No this isn’t lard slathered generously between two pieces of Wonder bread. It’s a sub, or hoagie, or grinder, or whatever you might call it that includes stuff that is generally on the side right on the sandwich itself. Sandwhiches or as I like to lovingly refer to them “Sammiches” are usually thought of as two pieces of bread or a roll that is stacked with meats, veggies, cheese, and condiments in and random or specific order made to your liking by yourself of people who have decided to sit on the low rung of the career totem pole. Anyways these fat sammiches in particular have generous portions of chosen meats, but also include french fries, onion rings, and mozzarella sticks on top of everything else already in said sammich. So ordering these sammiches got us to thinking about how we could expand our culinary-gastrovocabulary (new combo word=bonus points!) So we sat there devouring our sammiches (or were they devouring us) making lists of places we had heard of or knew about in the area that had unique items not usually found everywhere on their menus, and last week Che, Mike, and I started our gastronomical journey at a Vietnamese restaurant in Dorchester to have frogs legs!

So I’m not good at this blogging thing. It shouldn’t be this long between entries, but seeing as it’s coming up on the Abbsiversary of the creation of theabbsman.com and accompanying blog I’ve decided to turn over a new leaf. On or around April 1st I’m going to hopefully have up and running the newly redesigned website 2.0 with some brand spankin new content and such. Some of which will be stuff I’ve had done for a while but just haven’t had time to get up on the interwebs and some new new stuff which I haven’t even seen yet… And also I plan on including a whole new page devoted to sketchbook stuff. So yeah promises, promises!

On to other news! I kept forgetting to put it out here so sorry for the short notice but this Monday March 1st at my Alma mater the Art Institute of Boston they will be having an Illustrator’s Discussion Panel including our guest speakers James Yang, Mike Annear, and Joe Quinones! The even is open to the public and should prove to be really interesting and informative. Each illustrator has a different background whether they work more with comics, animation, or design they’ll be able to come with three different perspective to explain how they got to where they are and what their kind of work entails. It would be a great opportunity for anyone looking to make it in the field of illustration. For anyone interested in attending I’ve attached info below the flyer. The building itself is just a couple minutes walk outside Kenmore square!

Monday, March 1, 2010 at 6:30 PM Room 215
Free and open to the public @The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University
700 Beacon Street, Boston MA 02215

And lastly just some fun stuff in the works. My friend Che (from over at D.I.Y. Jet) and I are collaborating on the Boston Comics Roundtable’s newest anthology! A horror anthology no less entitled “Hellbound”. A book based entirely around creepy true and legendary stories from around the city of Boston. We’re both very excited and are working our creative butts off on our one page masterpiece so that it can be seen in stark black and red. The red ink being glow in the dark of course ^_~! I’ll post more info as it come’s along, and possibly post some process work previews.
